The objective of this course, presented in two separate lectures, is to present concepts, strategies, and decision making tools for advancing toward sustainable waste management. Drawing from a wide variety of academic disciplines and real life examples, this course provides a fast-paced tour of current thinking and actual accomplishments in the application of sustainability principles to waste management.
Part 1 focuses on sustainability principles and the transformation from a “waste management” paradigm to a “materials management” paradigm.
Upon completion of this course, the attendee will be able to:
- Describe sustainability principles and the challenges facing our society
- Discuss the meaning and goals of sustainable waste management
- Define the material management hierarchy and the optimal distribution of materials across this hierarchy
- Apply a conceptual framework that considers the full spectrum of possible waste management strategies
